Anika Larsen (b. 1996) is a Danish-American artist, born in California and based in Copenhagen. She received her BFA from New York University in 2018, where she studied in the Tisch School of the Arts Photography program and NYU Steinhardt’s Studio Art program.
Working across sculpture, installation, and photography that spans fashion, portraiture, and fine art, her practice explores the body as both a site of agency and constraint. With a lifelong fascination with fashion design, she often constructs the garments featured in her photographic work. Costume becomes a sculptural tool and an extension of the body’s form, psychology, and mythos.
She is especially drawn to tactile, wearable materials like spandex, which she transforms into soft sculptures. Embroidery and hand-sewn elements also feature prominently in her sculptural work. Her upcycled project, PLEASURE GROUND, explores cycles of deconstruction and renewal. Influenced by the principles of ancient alchemy, natural systems, and somatic experience, the work reflects an ongoing interest in transformation of matter, self, and desire.
Larsen’s visual language is grounded in material contrasts such as softness and structure, distortion and stillness, and pressure and release. Her work asks where freedom ends and control begins, offering a lens into how we stretch, shape, and restrain ourselves in pursuit of identity, beauty, or belonging.
